Matte Finish on our engineered French Oak flooring7 coats of highest quality varnishes: FIRST: Optimax Ceramic water-based varnish is applied to the French Oak wear layer, as the first coat of the varnishing process. This ensures an ecological and flame retardant material. PLUS: 6 successive layers of water based Matte acrylic varnish are applied to the French Oak lamella (wear layer). 👉 An entire division of Bona is dedicated to finishes for our manufacturer's flooring products. |
"Cat's Paw" Whorls In addition to its beautiful quiet colors and classic appeal, French Oak can occasionally have naturally occurring "Cat's Paw" whorls in the grain - a series of small adjacent knots that form the configuration of a cat's paw, right there in the wood grain. As though a little cat had walked across the wood as it formed. You'll find these delightful natural emblems in our High grade Rustic flooring. Comme un petit chat a marché sur le bois! |
Tannins One of the most useful features of French Oak is its high tannin content. A lot of European Oak, and especially American Oak, both have relatively low tannin content. Why does this matter? French Oak's high tannin content makes it receptive to stains and varnishes, and the tannin helps to "bind" those firmly into and onto the wood. The benefit of this is that finishes (and stain colors) on French Oak don't fade. In contrast, fading of finishes is a known problem with oak from forests outside France, i.e. from other parts of Europe or from America. |
